God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen (and Ladies!)
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I recently heard this old Christmas hymn of praise and joy (for that’s how carol is defined in my dictionary) and, word lover that I am, I was curious about its origin and wording. Some of what I found was expected, but one major thing was not.
And that makes all the difference in the world to the meaning of the song. Read more »
Somebody needs a hug today. And you can get one anytime you want—even if you are alone. For you see, if you have confessed Christ Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you really are never alone. The Holy Spirit of God is within you. And you can ask Him for anything, especially for a demonstration of His love for you.

Yesterday I was reading one of my Christian fiction stories — one of my all time favorite pastimes, when I came across the part of the story where the main character was in grave danger. She was desperate for help when the hymn “What a Friend” came to her mind. The author wrote out the first two verses of the hymn and as I was reading them, my heart was touched. Hebrews 4:14-15 states that we have a great high priest who knows and understands our weaknesses and what it is like to be tempted. The high priests in the Old Testament were the only ones who could go into the holy of holies in the temple and make the proper sacrifice for the sins of the people.
This morning in my daily Bible reading, I came across Romans 15:13 which says: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
His intercession provided salvation for all men through His substitutionary sacrifice on the cross, but it is only realised through His Intercessory ministry today in Heaven. God’s desire is that all men be saved, but in this context we are urged to join Christ in ministry as our Advocate through earnest, heartfelt prayer.
So many times we stumble and fall in our walk with God. We know, as followers of Christ, that we want to be pleasing to Him. But how can we?
As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. John 15:9
Jesus instructed us to enter through the narrow gate in order to have eternal life. To the world this sounds the same as narrow minded but to the believer it means joy, peace, salvation, provision, protection and everything else God offers his children.
